This was the birth of the Walther P5 as well as the SIG P6 and H&K P7 as parts of the "Munich Trio". Of course that never went through, the BW stuck with the P1 and around the same time in 1972 the Munich Massacre lead to the request by German Police of a new handgun to help them accommodate for terror attacks in the future. The P4 after its initial manufacture was intended to replace the P1 in the Bundeswehr as the standard issue sidearm, being a more handy, intuitive, and overall simplified P1. The P4's replacement, the P5, is actually contemporary with the former. The P4 was essentially a P38k with a traditional 4" barrel, one inch shorter than the P.38. The P38k was supposed to be a compact, simplified P.38 intended for special forces and actually predates what many consider to be its parent platform, the P4. Its interesting that the P38k was the initial iteration of the P4. 7800 Walther P4's were manufactured, and all by Manurhin of France from '75-80. Nothing fancy about this old girl.Īnyone else have a P4 and would like to add any missing details? The one on the left is a P38/P1 that was an ex-interior of the ministry (BMI) pistol. From what I read, some of them ended up in Rhodesia as well. The West Berlin Polizei did NOT want to wait for the P5 or P88 to get done and demanded that the issues found in the P1 be addressed while they waited for something better to come around.
I think it is fascinating how it came into service. I am looking to learn more about the P4 if anyone has any info. It is a wonderful shooter and takes P38 magazines. From some deep diving, I was told as few as 25-30 of these made it over to the US. The rest of them, interestingly enough manufactured by Manurhin, are marked Walther. It is estimated that 250-500 of these were ever produced marked Manurhin. The one on the right is a very scarce Manurhin P4 with West Berlin Police markings. So I have here one of the rarest pistols I own (rare in the true definition, not value wise).
